Barclay Curle Studios sits on South Street in Whiteinch, in a building with more history than most — it was once the engine works for the Barclay Curle shipyard, built in the 1920s and modelled on a well-known Berlin turbine house design. These days, the workshops that once built engines for ships on the Clyde are home to a very different, and much more varied, kind of production: a working community of independent makers, musicians, engineers and creatives, us included.

We thought it was worth introducing a few of the businesses we share the building with.

Makers & Craftspeople

Sara Melville Mosaics & Gardens — mosaic artistry and garden design work.
Peachy Tee Handmade Homewares — handmade homeware, in good company alongside our own workshop.
Glasgow Wood — a woodworking outfit rooted in the same reclaimed and sustainable-material thinking that runs through a lot of what happens at Barclay Curle.
Label Home — that's us: lamps, wall hangers, shelving and side tables made from reclaimed scaffold board and salvaged cast iron.

Sarmed Mirza — a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, drawing and film, moving between realism and abstraction. He also runs drawing and painting classes for all levels out of his Barclay Curle studio. sarmed.com

Pascale Steenkiste — Belgian artist Pascale Steenkiste is an intuitive abstract artist. She is influenced by her surroundings, travel and people but also other artists.

Barclay Curle also hosts — perhaps the building's most unexpected occupant — The Revelator, a hand-built circus Wall of Death.

A Building Still Being Built On

What ties this list together isn't a shared trade — it's a shared way of working: small, independent, hands-on. Barclay Curle went from building ships and engines to housing the people who build guitars, mosaics, furniture and chai blends, and it's still adding names.
